SURFING AMERICA USA CHAMPIONSHIPS SET TO DECIDE 2010 USA CHAMPIONS AND 2011 PACSUN USA SURF TEAM

Competition to run June 19-22 in Huntington Beach, California and June 23-28 at Lower Trestles, San Onofre State Park, California

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. - May 5, 2010 - Surfing America, the national governing body for surfing in the USA, is gearing up for the annual Surfing America USA Championships.  The event, which decides the undisputed USA surfing champions by pooling top talent from Surfing America recognized organizations and the Surfing America Prime Series presented by Got Milk? will culminate in the announcement of the 2011 PacSun USA Surf Team.

This year’s USA Championships event will be held in two locations:  Huntington Beach Pier from June 19-22 and Lower Trestles at San Onofre State Park in San Clemente, CA from June 23-28.

The Huntington Beach dates (June 19-22) will include all preliminary rounds of competition for the following Adult and Longboard Divisions:

Mens
Womens
Masters
Seniors
Legends
Junior Longboard
Mens Longboard
Senior Longboard
Girls Longboard
Womens Longboard

The Lower Trestles dates will include the Final Round of the Adult and Longboard Divisions (June 23) above as well as all rounds of the following Under 18 Shortboard Divisions (June 23-28):

Boys Under 18
Boys Under 16
Boys Under 14
Boys Under 12
Girls Under 18
Girls Under 16
Girls Under 14
Girls Under 12

The Lower Trestles dates will be available to watch Live online via the Verizon Live Webcast at http://surfingamerica.org

Also, during the Lowers Dates, Surfing America will host the PacSun Battle of the Brands!  The Battle of the Brands is a tag-team format event in which each of Surfing America’s industry sponsor brands (Billabong, Hurley, O’Neill, and Vans) field a four-person team consisting of two professionals, a woman and a grom under the age of 18.  The only brands invited to compete are the PacSun USA Surf       Team’s Official Sponsors.

Aside from bragging rights, the winning brand will get a special in-store promotion from PacSun through its channel of approximately 900 stores nationwide.  There will also be a Media Heat pitting teams from (Surfer, Surfing, Transworld SURF, Fuel TV, Surfline, and ESM).

“We’re very excited about this year’s USA Championships event and are confident it will be the best ever,” said Mike Gerard, Surfing America’s executive director.  “The Surfing America Prime Series has been running all year long on both coasts and has significantly raised the qualitative bar for the Under 18 competitors nationally.  We should see some incredible surfing at Lowers.”

The Surfing America USA Championships are recognized as the premier event in American junior surfing, thanks to an ASP panel of judges, live scoring and four-person, twenty-minute heats. Although, the event is youth focused, it still holds divisions for elder surfers as well.

In addition, Surfing America has partnered up with Project Save our Surf and its celebrtity SURF 24 event on June 19-20 during the Huntington Beach event window.  http://projectsaveoursurf.com

SURF 24 begins on Saturday June 19th at 11am beside the legendary Huntington Pier. World champion surfers Shaun Tomson and PT Townend will join actress and surfer Tanna Frederick as Co-hosts to kick off the opening ceremony. Teams consisting of recreational surfers, celebrities, branded professionals, students, and surf legends will compete to put up the best wave each hour for 24 straight hours - with every wave ridden a pledge toward ocean conservation.

SURF 24 proceeds will be donated to the national level of the Surfrider Foundation, Santa Monica’s Heal the Bay and the OC Board of Education program Inside the Outdoors.

On the evening of June 28th, the 2011 PacSun USA Surf Team will be announced in a special event held at the Casino in San Clemente, CA. The 2011 PacSun USA Surf Team will represent the United States next year at the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.
