O’NEILL TAKES THREE IN A ROW AT THE THIRD ANNUAL PACSUN BATTLE OF THE BRANDS

Fuel TV Dethrones Transworld Surf in the Media Division

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (September 2, 2009) – Surfing America, the National Governing Body for the sport of surfing in the United States, is pleased to announce the results of the Third Annual PacSun Battle of the Brands. This unique event ran Saturday August 29, on the South side of the Huntington Beach Pier as part of the 2009 SIMA Surfing America USA Championships presented by Verizon Wireless.

Luke Davis, the sole Team O’Neill veteran solidified their win with this smooth barrel ride.

PacSun’s Battle of the Brands is a fun, industry, team contest in which each of the Surfing America industry brand and media sponsors select surfers to compete on their behalf. Brand teams consisted of two pros, a woman and a grom, while Media teams were comprised of current employees. All competed in a tag team format for the benefit of the PacSun USA Surf Team. Brand teams were also in contention for an exclusive, in-store promotion with all PacSun stores across the nation, while Surfing America’s Media partners were competing for their chance to score a $10,000 increase in PacSun’s scheduled advertising buy for 2010.

Competitors included Brand Teams from Billabong, Hurley, Quiksilver, O’Neill, and Rip Curl. Media Teams represented Surfline, SURFER, Surfing, Transworld Surf, and Fuel TV.

Team O’Neill, reigning Battle of the Brands Brand Champion, has won this event every year since its inception two years ago. Pat Gudauskas, Dion Atkinson, Kyla Langen and Luke Davis have made up O’Neill’s winning four-some in the past, but this year they opted to change their line-up to include Kanoa Igarashi, Sage Erickson, and Ian Crane in addition to Luke Davis, their sole veteran. This proved to be a wise decision as the new team clinched yet another victory for O’Neill extending their dynasty for another year. “We always enjoy mixing it up at PacSun’s Battle of the Brands,” says Steve Ward, O’Neill Clothing’s Vice President of Marketing. “This year our young guys made us proud.”

Matt Beacham, pulling out all the stops for Team Fuel.

At the end of the fun-filled day, O’Neill and Fuel TV walked away victorious. For their win, O’Neill gets a weekend window take-over in PacSun’s stores across America in Spring 2010. For theirs, Fuel TV has earned a $10,000 ad buy from PacSun.

“It was the third year and this event has become everything we hoped it would be,” said Surfing America Executive Director Mike Gerard. “While the surf brands are highly competitive in their business, the group collectively, is a tribe of its own. Seeing everyone come together and ‘battle’ in support of the USA Surf Team is symbolic of what this initiative is all about.”
